Indian kitchens are armed to the teeth — Mortein, HIT, Baygon, Lakshman Rekha, Maxo, a dozen gels and sprays per shelf. And yet the cockroach endures. So a mischievous question: could the manufacturers themselves be quietly keeping the problem alive?
Before guessing, a fact that reframes everything. A 2024 genomic study in PNAS — 280+ specimens across 17 countries — traced the German cockroach to an origin roughly 2,100 years ago, most likely in India or Myanmar. It then hitchhiked along trade and colonial routes across the planet. Strikingly, it has no wild population anywhere on Earth. It exists only where we do. Nobody had to release it. We already did, over two millennia, by accident.
Now let’s separate two claims the question smuggles together: the literal one (a company physically seeds roaches) and the structural one (industries are poorly incentivised to end the problems they monetise). One is almost certainly false. The other is one of the most important ideas in political economy. Here are the numbers for both.
1. The numbers behind the suspicion
You can’t take a census of cockroaches, but you can audit the money — and the money only grows. The global household-insecticide market was about US$16–19 billion in 2024 and is forecast to pass US$30 billion by 2033. The wider pest-control services market was roughly US$26–28 billion, heading toward US$34–44 billion by 2030–2035. Estimates vary by analyst, but every arrow points up — driven by urbanisation, warming cities, and hygiene anxiety, not by anyone smuggling in roaches.
Demand is structurally perpetual — which, as we’ll see, is exactly why seeding pests would be pointless.
2. Who profits — and who owns them
If there were a conspiracy, here is who would have to be in on it. The category is dominated by a handful of consumer giants and two listed pest-control behemoths — publicly listed, audited, and watched by activist short-sellers. Reckitt is ~84% owned by institutions answerable to fiduciary and ESG rules; Rollins and Rentokil file audited quarterly results scrutinised by analysts who profit from catching frauds. A scheme to breed pests would need thousands of employees across rival firms — and their auditors, and BlackRock — to keep a criminal secret with nothing to personally gain. The structure of the ownership is itself evidence against the structure of the conspiracy.
3. What’s actually in the can
The chemistry tells its own story. Modern roach control leans on delayed-action baits — and a delayed-action bait is engineered around the assumption that the roach lives long enough to walk home and poison the colony. The product needs a living, social population to work through. That is a strange thing to also secretly replenish.
4. What the law allows
Every one of those molecules is gated by statute. In India, the Insecticides Act, 1968 requires every product to be registered with the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee before sale. The US runs the equivalent gauntlet through the EPA under FIFRA; the EU through its Biocidal Products Regulation. The relevant point: deliberately releasing a disease-vector pest into homes would not be a clever growth hack — it would be a serious crime under public-health, environmental, and fraud law in every one of these jurisdictions, with the brand’s entire equity as collateral.
5. The data that actually supports the suspicion
Here is where honesty earns its keep. There is real, peer-reviewed data — it just supports a subtler claim than “they breed roaches.” Three strands:
- Pesticide-induced resurgence. Sublethal doses can biologically boost pest reproduction; in planthoppers, low insecticide doses upregulate juvenile-hormone genes and raise female fecundity (eLife, 2024). The product can amplify the problem — through chemistry, not conspiracy.
- Evolved resistance. German cockroaches evolved glucose aversion — the sugar in sweet baits literally turned bitter — so the survivors refuse the trap and breed the next, tougher generation. Evolution does the “seeding” for free.
- Documented fraud — at the wrong level. There are prosecutions of pest-control service firms planting bugs and faking inspections. The mechanism (“sell a need that isn’t there”) is litigated fact — but it’s rogue salespeople, not product-makers farming insects.
All of this supports “the industry is entangled with the persistence of the problem.” None supports “a manufacturer releases cockroaches.” A careful reader treats data that fits a weaker claim as evidence for the weaker claim — not as a down payment on the spicy one.
6. Should we even want a world with zero roaches?
Of roughly 4,500 cockroach species, fewer than 2% — about 70 — are pests, and only four are widespread household invaders. The other ~4,400 are unglamorous ecological workers: decomposers that break down dead wood and waste, returning nutrients to soil and feeding birds, reptiles and small mammals. But the German cockroach has no wild population to lose — it is a purely human-made commensal. So the morally interesting position is narrow, not absolute: eradicating the four synanthropic pests would cost wild ecosystems close to nothing, while “kill every roach” would be a real ecological error. The goal isn’t zero roaches. It’s zero roaches in your kitchen.
7. Why the theory is so attractive
The theory’s appeal is independent of its truth, and noticing the gap is the whole skill. In Rationality, Steven Pinker contrasts a reality mindset (beliefs we expect to be tested against the world) with a mythology mindset (beliefs held for what they do for us — a villain with a face). “Mega-corp breeds the bug to sell the spray” is a near-perfect mythology product: it turns entropy, evolution and the tropics into a culprit. The reality-mindset move is the boring one — ask what evidence would change your mind, then go count it.
8. Where I actually land
On the literal claim: I think it’s false, held with high but not infinite confidence. Every explanation that doesn’t require a decades-long criminal conspiracy — resurgence, resistance, urbanisation, a 2,100-year head start — is simpler and better evidenced than the one that does.
But I keep the structural residue, because it’s the valuable part. Industries are frequently misaligned with solving the problems they’re paid to manage — true of pesticides, chronic-disease pharma, the engagement economy. The lesson isn’t “someone is releasing roaches.” It’s follow the incentive gradient, and be suspicious of any business model whose ideal customer never gets better — a question worth asking of almost every industry.
Is the “problem you’re paid to solve” tension something we should regulate around, or just the price of markets? I’d genuinely like to be argued with.
